MDF - HMR - Plaswood: Their Advantages and Disadvantages iwa Design Provides Insight

1. Plywood

It is more durable than fiberboard (MDF – HMR – HDF), which is a type of synthetic compressed wood.

Plywood is stronger.
More resistant to moisture.
The termite-resistant coating is incorporated into the manufacturing process.
Higher price
Slightly heavier for the same thickness.

2. So when should you use fiberboard?

When we need a smooth surface.
When trying to save money on construction.
When it comes to spray painting, water-based paint, or high-gloss spray paint, we need to use these materials.

3. What are the differences between MDF, HMR, and HDF?

Fiberboard is made by compressing wood powder together using heat.

When comparing in terms of density/strength:
a. HDF is the densest material, making it suitable for use in doors.
b. HMR is the second densest.
c. Lowest density MDF.

Compare moisture control methods:
a. HMR offers the best moisture resistance (because it contains moisture-resistant additives during the manufacturing process).
b. HDF is the stiffest and densest, but not as moisture-resistant as HMR.
c. MDF is the least moisture-resistant.

4. Add other materials.

4.1 Particle Board

Similar to MDF material, but made by compressing coarse wood powder over high temperatures.
Its density is lower than MDF.
The cheapest, but the most fragile.

Particle board is suitable for mass production.
Freestanding furniture, or furniture from popular stores like IKEA, often uses these materials.

Particle board can be finished with laminate or melamine coating using a 'hot pressing' process at the factory, which can somewhat increase its durability.
Because this material cannot expose its surface.

4.2 Plaswood

It is a synthetic compression material made from PVC powder. This type of material is the most expensive.

strength:
smooth surface
It can be bent.
Best waterproof
Suitable for outdoor use.
Suitable for applying graphics over.

weakness:
It has less strength and can bear less weight than plywood.
A white finish, or a white surface, will not retain the feel or appearance of wood.
Can only be painted over or graphic elements applied over it.

4.3 Smartboard / Cement board / Viva board

These are sheet materials, suitable for use in architectural applications.
It's highly durable, but not well-made.
